Competition rules

  • The 2nd Transylvanian International Piano Competition will take place from July 9th to July 15th 2018, in Brasov, Romania at the Reduta Concert Hall.

  • The competition is open to all pianists around the world between the ages of 7 – 28 years old. For further details, please read section 2 of the rules.
  • The candidate must submit the application form; according to the instructions given in “How to Apply” (see Section 9).

  • Upon arrival, each contestant is asked to present himself in the foyer of the Reduta Concert Hall to register and to get a name tag for verification.
  • All applications will be screened by the organizers.

  • Candidates who study with a Jury member (not including Master Classes) are allowed to participate but their teacher will not be able to mark their performance.
  • Children or relatives of the jury members of any degrees are not allowed to participate in the competition.

  • All stages of the competition will be open to the public.

  • By signing up to the competition you automatically agree that all materials resulted during the competition or received before or after the competition by the organizers from you can and will be used for marketing and commercial purposes.
  • Category A: 7 - 10 years old – 9th of July 2018
  • Category B: 11 – 14 years old – 9th of July 2018
  • Category C: 15 – 18 years old – 10th of July 2018
    • * Categories A, B and C will have their own prize awarding ceremony on the 10th of July 2018 in the evening.
  • Category D: Young Artists, 19 – 28 years old
    • * 12th to 13th of July 2018 - First Round (eliminatory round)
    • * 15th of July 2018 – Second Round

ATTENTION! The prize winners of all age categories will perform one piece selected by the jury at the prize awarding ceremony.

NOTES:
  • - Contestants should not be older than the given age limit at the time of their audition.
  • - Upon written request, contestants can apply for an older age category than their own.
  • - Contestants are required to present themselves to the concert hall at least 30 minutes before the audition. Any latecomers will not be admitted to their audition.
  • - Contestants will enter their auditions in alphabetical order.
  • Category A: 7 - 10 years old - Free choice program of maximum 10 – 15 minutes
  • Category B: 11 – 14 years old - Free choice program of maximum 15 – 20 minutes
  • Category C: 15 – 18 years old - Free choice program of maximum 20 – 25 minutes
  • Category D: Young Artists, 19 – 28 years old

    • 1st Round – eliminatory round
      • a. One Prelude and Fugue from the ”Well Tempered Clavier” by Bach.
      • b. An Etude by Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Scriabin, Bartòk, Rachmaninov, Kessler, Rubinstein, Moscheles, Mendelssohn, Lutoslawski, Prokofiev
      • c. One or more movements from a classical Sonata (you can include Schubert)
      • The first round should not last longer than 20 minutes. If the contestant plays longer than the allotted time, she or he will be interrupted by the jury.

    • 2nd Round
    • Free choice program with the recommendation to include one cycle of pieces or a whole longer piece of the Romantic or Modern time period.
      The 2nd round should not last longer than 45 minutes. Works previously played in the first round should not be included in the repertoire for the second round.
      The 2nd round of the Young Artists category will be streamed live online.

NOTES
  • - The competitor shall choose editions that adhere to the original text.
  • - All pieces must be performed from memory.
  • - The competitor shall play only those pieces which she/he has stated on the Application Form. For changes please inform the secretary of the competition at least one week before the performance.
  • - Approximate timings of all pieces chosen must be indicated on the Application Form.
  • - The competitor must ensure that the time limits stipulated for each age category in the competition Rules, shall not be exceeded.
  • - Competitors who adhere to the given time limits will not be interrupted.
  • - The pieces may be performed with or without repeats, at the competitor’s discretion.
  • - All decisions of the Jury shall be final and cannot be appealed.
  • - All prizes will be awarded unless the jury unanimously decides not to award one or more of the prizes.
  • - In case of a tie, the Jury may decide to split a prize between two competitors.
  • - For the Young Artists section, the 1st Prize will not be divided.
  • - All prize money is subject to tax under Romanian taxation laws.

  • Category A: 7 - 10 years old
    • * 1st prize of € 300
    • * 2nd prize - € 150
    • * 3rd prize - € 75

  • Category B: 11 – 14 years old
    • * 1st prize of € 400
    • * 2nd prize - € 200
    • * 3rd prize - € 100

  • Category C: 15 – 18 years old
    • * 1st prize of € 500
    • * 2nd prize - € 250
    • * 3rd prize - € 125

  • Category D: Young Artists, 19 – 28 years old
    • * 1st Prize of € 1.500
    • * 2nd Prize - € 800
    • * 3rd Prize - € 500
* Additional prizes, as well as concert engagements offered to the prizewinners, will be announced on the competition website and in the competition program

The name and any materials related to the competition are property of the organizers and are a registered trademark.
Full copyright is held by the Cultural Association Visio-Musica and/or its assignees and licensees.

All stages of the competition may be broadcasted and streamed live and may be recorded and videotaped for subsequent broadcast, video, DVD, audio recording or equivalent or any other format/media use. It is anticipated that CD recordings of selected competition performances will be commercially produced, that a documentary of the competition incorporating selected performances will be produced for television, and that the competition will be made available on the internet and /or an equivalent media. Camera crews may photograph all competition events.

Neither the organization of the Transylvanian International Piano Competition nor its assignees or licensees may be held liable for any payments to pianists arising out of materials derived from competition performances.

On request, you can have pictures taken during the playing or after (in the concert hall) for a fee of € 20 and an audio recording also for a fee of € 20.
All travel expenses are to be paid by the competitors.

The suggested flight is to Bucharest where you will take a bus that will bring you to Brasov. Please contact us for further information.

Each competitor shall find an accommodation on his own or ask via e-mail at office@tipnoc.com if they wish to get some suggestions.

Practice rooms will be provided at the Music High School “Tudor Ciortea” Brașov. Upon arrival, every competitor will get a fairly split amount of hours to practice and the room number for each day until the audition, depending on the number of candidates.
  • 1. All applications must be submitted online OR via e-mail to: office@tipnoc.com
  • 2. Application will commence on March 1st 2018, and must be submitted by July 1st, 2018.
  • 3. All documents must be submitted in English or Romanian. If the original is in a different language, a correct English or Romanian translation must be attached to the original.
  • 4. Only complete applications will be considered.
  • 5. All documents listed below (a – h) must be uploaded through the online application.
  • 6. Confirmation of receipt of the application will arrive as soon as possible.
  • 7. Receipt of documents sent by regular mail will be confirmed by e-mail.
  • 8. Notification of acceptance or non-acceptance to the competition will be sent to the applicants by e-mail, by July 1st 2018.
  • 9. The application fee is without exception non-refundable.

  • a. Birth certificate or any other official document establishing the age of the applicant.
  • b. Biography (curriculum vitae) which should include details of musical activity like prizes, the most important stage performances, special events where the contestant has played etc.
  • c. The name of your school/university and names of teachers.
  • d. A high-resolution photograph.

  • - Category A, 7 - 10 years old: € 50
  • - Category B, 11 - 14 years old: € 50
  • - Category C, 15 - 18 years old: € 60
  • - Category D, Young Artists, 19 - 28 years old: € 80
